Through the 1990s, both companies collaborated actively in continuously bringing new products to market and have jointly achieved many Indian firsts through effective surgeon collaborations as well as validation of new products.
The group has firmly believed in supporting the cause of ‘Indian Innovation’ in the orthopaedic field. This belief led to the creation of the first truly indigenous invention in the field of orthopaedics, the Universal Mini External Fixator system. Conceived by a group of eminent orthopaedic surgeons in Mumbai, led by Prof. B.B Joshi and Prof. Laud, the UMEX system enables clinical solutions in areas not addressed by products and devices from the Western world. UMEX enables effective treatment and rehabilitation in the case of extremity fractures (fractures in the hands and feet), crushing injuries of the extremities and paediatric deformities like club feet and club hand. The superior clinical outcomes possible with UMEX have led to adoption of the system by some prestigious centers in the U.K, Germany and U.S and also to peer reviewed clinical publications in noteworthy journals like the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Over the last decade, the group has consistently introduced new clinical solutions in the areas of fracture management, spine surgery and reconstructive orthopaedics.
While UMEX fuelled the spirit of innovation and creativity of Indian clinicians, ZETA and TITAN brought to Indian spine surgeons, for the first time, spinal implants that carried the safety born out of pre-clinical validation, a unique Indian first in this area.
In the area of spine surgery, the ONELOCK spine system achieved performance benchmarks that were superior to some of the best companies in the world and heralded the entry of the Sushrut-Adler group into an exclusive club of companies who could create high performance designs in the orthopaedic device field.
The creation of the CERVIEDGE spine system for anterior cervical spine surgery led to another ‘first’, in the form of Finite Element Analysis methods that validated the systems performance benchmarked to well known clinically successful systems in the area.
In the area of fracture management, the introduction of intramedullary nailing solutions like the ATLAS and TIFLEX nailing systems led to the establishment of strong brands, trusted for product performance at reasonable prices affordable to vast sections of the Indian population.
Surgery for cancers of the bone, viz bone tumours has made significant advances internationally in the last two decades. While the only recourse for such patients previously was an amputation, the emergence of limb salvage surgery, where, the affected bone is removed and replaced with a sophisticated mega-prosthesis, has been a boon to such patients, saving their limbs and improving their quality of life. Unfortunately, these expensive solutions were out of reach of most Indian patients. To address this need, the Sushrut Adler group embarked on an ambitious project in cooperation with the orthopaedic oncology service of the prestigious Tata Memorial Hospital in the year 2000. An indigenous limb salvage system was developed in cooperation with the surgeons from the ground up, that underwent extensive clinical use for nearly six years during which time the system was refined and perfected. This led to the launch of RESTOR, a modular limb salvage solution that has made limb salvage surgery accessible and affordable to thousands of Indian patients afflicted with bone tumours every year.
With the increasing incidence of osteoporotic fractures seen throughout the 1990’s and continuing into the next century, fractures of the hip in the ageing population is emerging as a problem of increasing severity. The Sushrut-Adler group, taking cognizance of the need to provide a high quality solution to these patients, embarked on the development of a Modular Bipolar System which is recognized as a clinically sound treatment modality for these patients. These development goals were realized with the launch of the EndoFit-ModuLoc Modular Bipolar Prosthesis, a system that embodies in its development and manufacturing, the Sushrut-Adler Group’s commitment to patient safety. EndoFit femoral hip stems are dual-taper, highly polished cemented stems, forged from high nitrogen stainless steel. Stringent microstructure controls have been implemented to deliver hip stems that meet contemporary international standards of implant performance and expected implant survivorship. ModuLoc Bipolar Cups have been designed with careful consideration of nearly three decades of clinical use of various bipolar cup designs. The ModuLoc range is designed to resist cup-head dissociation, the most common failure mode of bipolar implants and is also expected to provide implant survivorship in line with current international norms.
